Onkyo Corporation is a Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer company. It was founded in Osaka, Japan on September 17, 1946. It has its headquarters in Osaka, Japan. The word Onkyo translates to sound harmony and going by the name, it specializes in home cinema and audio equipment including receivers, sound speakers and other portable devices. It is currently owned by Gibson Brands and employs around 2149 people and generates a revenue of around dollar 492 million.
Onkyo is represented by Muneoneri Otsuki, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. Onkyo is basically involved in the design, development and sales of automotive speaker systems and production products and components by commission. The history of Onkyo Corporation dates back to September 1946 when the company was established in Osaka city. In March 1947 it changed its corporate name to Osaka Onkyo K.K. In June, 1957 it entered into an equity capital agreement with Toshiba Corporations and later opened Kori Factory and Nisshin Factory in Neyagawa city, Osaka. In July 1972, it established Onkyo Europe Electronics as a sales company in Germany, which is currently a consolidated subsidiary. In November 1972 it relocated its headquarters to Neyagawa city, Osaka and established Acoustic Technology Research Centre. It established Onkyo US A Corporation as a sales company.
The company has expanded exponentially in the 1990s and 2000s. It established its branches in many countries all over the world like China, Europe, Middle East, Africa and many more. It began the sales of INTEC 185 micro component systems and audio board for PC. It also entered into a capital and business alliance with Gibson Guitar Corporation and TEAC Corporation. In March 2015 it acquired all Pioneer Home Electronics shares unifying the home A/V, phone, and headphone related business of Pioneer changing the name to Onkyo and Pioneer Technology Corporation. The company is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary in all glory and pride.
